Not a good time to prune fruit trees
Gift ideas for gardeners; this month starts the pruning season--what to prune and when; covering soil in December; asking the right questions when choosing a new fruit tree

Host Glen Andresen and co-pilot Jim Gilbert are back in the KBOO studio for a live December show. Hey, wondering what gift to give to a gardener in your life (or your favorite KBOO gardening show hosts)? We've got ideas. This month starts the pruning season...and it can be a long one. But what to prune when and how? Jim knows and reveals all. And if a new fruit tree is in your future, it's important to ask the right questions to determine if if will do well in your climate and location.

As always, we'll have a new Plant of the Month (Mahonia x media 'Arthur Menzies’ ) and a new Garden Stumper--the first listener who calls in with the correct answer gets a free sharpening of a gardening hand tool from Cully Farm Store in Northeast Portland. Our musical theme this month is a tribute to three musicians who died in 2025 that had an impact on Glen. Plus, our Dirtbag Dictionary term is "catkin." And finally, what Glen is trying to understand this month.

Don't forget, if you have a gardening question, and don't want to call in, you can always email us at thedirtbag@kboo.org -- we'll answer your question on the air during the next show. And, surprise, this is the same email to use to answer The Garden Stumper if you don't want to call in.

The Dirtbag, a garden variety show... Listen. Laugh. Learn.
