On Saturday, activists with the Occupy Wall Street movement around the world held events to encourage people to move their money out of corporate banks and into credit unions.
In Portland, a march began at the Occupy Portland encampment and stopped at Wells Fargo, Chase, Bank of America and other corporate banks to issue citizens’ arrest warrants for fraud and theft.
KBOO’s Crystal Elinski was there, and brings us some of the sounds of the protest:
Chanting ‘Banks got bailed out, we got sold out’, the protesters marched throughout downtown Portland Saturday. After posting their ‘citizens arrest warrants’ on the windows of corporate banks, the protesters ended up at a local credit union, which served coffee and donuts and helped people open new accounts.
Although the numbers are not yet in for the weekend’s actions, the National Credit Union Association reported that over seven hundred thousand people have opened accounts at credit unions over the last month.
